He grows up to be a slim and awkward youth, indifferent and blasé and is expelled for drunkenness. Falling into bad company he runs up debts, and even defrauds Miss Leslie. Ashamed, he then enlists in the Army, is sent to the Boer War, and is killed in action saving the life of a childhood friend. An outstanding novel by this great British novelist!
