Description : The Last of the Mohicans is a classic book from an American author, James Cooper that was first published in 1826. This historical novel is second in Cooper's Leather Stocking Tales of Heroic Scouts and is set in 1757, in what is now upstate New York near Saratoga Springs, during the French and Indian War that lasted for seven years. As was the tradition during that time in the 19th century of creating historically inspired stories, this tale focuses on one long battle between France and England for the possession of American tribes in order to gain an advantage over the English. However, what they encounter are unpredictable tragedies at the end. The unarmed massacre, the kidnapping of two sisters and the rescue by Hawk-eye and his two friends, the Mohicans - Uncas and Chingachook, is at the centre of this novel. Uncas the principal character is based on the real life person, Mohegan Sachem, who had been an ally of the English in 17th century Connecticut. One of the most popular and widely read novel it is still loved in American literature till date.
