Description : The fifth volume in the eight part of an epic graphic novel series by Osamu Tezuka, Buddha: Deer Park (Volume 5) is the story of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. In the eight books, the story follows the life of Gautama Buddha as he grows up, gets married, discovers his true faith and starts a religion with a million followers the world over. In these graphic novels, Tezuka presents a curious blend of themes and styles. Beautifully detailed landscapes are marked by cartoon-like characters and the book is filled with silly whimsy, fictional and non-fictional stories from the life of Buddha and a whole host of characters from modern day fiction like ET and Yoda. In the fifth book, Osamu Tezuka takes off from where the last book ended, with the enlightenment and the renaming of Siddhartha to Buddha. Deer Park starts with Gautama Buddha and his first disciples – the deer of the forest! Buddha spends his days extolling his teachings in the Deer Park to the deer who call this forest home. It is sheer delight for Buddha when they listen attentively and respond to what he has to say, just as if they knew what Buddha was saying. It is in the Deer Park that the first foundations of Buddhism are laid down. It is here that Buddha reveals his “Middle Way”, the one through which he found enlightenment. Through the book, Buddha gives many analogies and metaphors to help his disciples understand the thoughts and ideas behind his philosophy. Parallel to the story of Buddha and the beginning of Buddhism continues the story of Yatala, the orphan who grew up to be merciless, brutal person. In the mean time, Tatta becomes one of the most feared soldiers in the kingdom and is forced to battle a giant (who turns out to be Yatala). Devadutta is still as manipulative as can be and is hell bent on creating friction between two rival kingdoms. This friction between the two rival kingdoms leads to a bloody and vicious war and leaves thousands dead in its wake. Deer Park, the fifth book in the Buddha series by Osamu Tezuka deals with a lot of misery and death. But, in doing so, it tries to explain the lesson that can be learnt from death – the importance of life, of living. Filled with beautiful sketches and drawings, the fifth book is as hilarious and intricate as the previous novels by Osamu Tezuka.
