Description : This volume brings together two of William Shakespeare’s, an English poet and playwright considered as one of the greatest writers, famous tragedies, Julius Caesar and Othello, which are staged all around the world, even today. In Julius Caesar, the playwright describes the turbulent rule of Julius Caesar and its penetrating study of political life in ancient Rome that recounts his assassination as well as subsequent suicide of Brutus after his defeat in the second Battle of Phillipi. Othello, based on Italian writer, Cinthio’s tale Un Capitano Moro, is set against the backdrop of the wars between Venice and Turkey that raged in the latter part of the sixteenth century. The antagonism of black and white imagery in this play is so subtle as to be never so racially specific. These plays will allow the reader to realise why Shakespeare is considered the ‘King of Tragedies.’
